Crochet Heart Applique and Granny Square – A Free Pattern for you to Love
With this pattern, you can make a heart applique or a heart granny square. And it’s so easy, I reckon you’re gonna love it!
A granny square is the foundation of so many new projects. You can make bags, buntings, clothes, blankets, toys. I made a bunting from this project by crocheting a long chain that I weaved in and out of the granny squares. I also used the heart applique to decorate some winter beanies.
Pattern Notes
The heart granny square is made with 4 Contrasting Colours (CC).
Round 1 and 2 will form the heart motif, so use red yarn to begin (or whatever colour you wish your heart to be). Round 3 and 4 form borders around the heart. Round 5 and 6 forms the square around the heart motif.
Gauge
Gauge is not really necessary for this pattern. You can work these motifs in various weights, keeping in mind that the size will change depending on your yarn and hook size.
My motifs were worked with 8ply/Dk yarn and a 4.5 mm hook. They measure just over 4 inches (11cms) across.

Fasten Off with an invisible join.
And that’s it – your lurve heart granny square is complete.
How to do an invisible join
In this pattern, the invisible join is used for all joins where there is a change of colour, and for the final fastening off.
Using your darning needle, pull the final thread through the last stitch worked.
Insert your needle under both loops of the second stitch from the beginning.
Insert your needle under the back loop of the last stitch worked in Round 2.
Now pull the thread gently and it will form a new stitch over the top of the 1st stitch of the round. Weave in the end and your invisible join is complete.
