Want to explore New Techniques with Crochet Texture & Colour? This Beanie Pattern is for you.

Here’s a free crochet pattern for a fab looking winter beanie that has lots of texture and colourwork. The technique is simple but effective – the variegated vertical lines are created by using two yarn colours and post stitches.

I think the pattern looks far more difficult than it actually is to crochet. There are no tapestry crochet techniques required in this hat, and the colour changes occur after every 2nd round, so it’s not disruptive to your flow of work. The result is a great looking hat that has a lot of warmth and a nice stretchy, scrunchy quality to the weave.

This free pattern is ideal for advanced beginners to intermediate crocheters looking to crochet something that can help expand their skills.

An ad-free downloadable version of this pattern is available at my Etsy or Love Crochet shop for a small fee. A UK terminology pattern is included with the downloadable version. There is also a pattern available for matching booties.

Pattern Notes

Pattern is written in US terminology.

The beanie is worked in the round, top-to-bottom.

Join each round with a ss. Unless stated otherwise, replace the first dc of each round with no-turning dc or alternatively add a ch2 at the beginning of each round. This ch2 does not count as stitch.

fpdc2b – front post double crochet 2 below. See Photo Guide below for further help. If you are familiar with front post double crochet you usually work around the post of the stitch in the round/row below. With fpdc2b you are working into the stitch on the 2nd round below.

Photo Guide

This is the lantern beanie (Toddler size) after the first two rounds are complete. The beginning dc (2) stitches have been worked and you are now ready to work the fpdc 2 below stitches.

Below shows the placement of your first fpdc2b stitch. Remember these will be fairly long stitches, so try not to work them too tightly. Note, your next dc stitch might get hidden behind the post stitch, just push it forward (if necessary) to find that next stitch.

The next image below shows the lantern hat after Rnd 3 is finished. This round completes your first round of fpdc2b stitches with 2 dc between every post stitch.

And below shows the reverse side of your hat after Rnd 3 is complete. Note that each yellow dc from round 2 has a dc worked into it i.e. There should be no skipped dc stitches in this round as it’s an increase round. Also note how I have carried up the contrast yarn under my first stitch of the round.

This is the lantern hat after Rnd 4 is complete. You can see I have changed colour again ready to work the next round of fpdc2b stitches.

From Round 5 onwards the fpdc2b stitches are worked 2 rounds below, around the fpdc stitch worked previously, as shown by the picture below.

Follow the pattern remembering to change your colours every 2 rounds, apart from the bottom edging which is worked in one colour. Keep in mind that when you work an increase round you will work into every dc stitch as well as work fpdc2b sts. For no-increase rounds you will skip dc stitches as indicated by the pattern.

I hope you enjoyed this pattern by Roaming Pixies : )
